Q99 Christmas Choir Contest

Q99 Christmas Choir Contest WINNER!
Congratulations to the Roanoke College Children's Choir, winners of the Q99 / Sherwood Memorial Park Christmas Choir Contest!

April 2, 2010

Summer is fast approaching (indeed, it's going to top 80 degrees the next few days!), so for rising 1st graders thru graduating 12th graders it's time to register for KJPAS camp! This year's theme is "From Oz to Wicked". We will be performing songs from The Wizard of Oz and Wicked, as well as doing original comedic Oz scenes written by our own playwright, Dwayne Yancey (who also penned the scenes for our recent Jefferson Center production, Broadway on Thin Ice).

For the first time ever we have combined the acting and musical theatre camps in both our middle school and high school programs to make for a more unified performing arts experience. This year our campers will no longer have to choose acting over musical theatre (or vice versa). They will have the opportunity to audition on the first day for both scenes and musical numbers! We will also be casting individual numbers, not through-line characters, which means that several girls will end up playing Elphaba or Glinda -more opportunities for our campers to be featured!

To date, 10 of our campers from 2009 have booked professional paying commercial and print jobs because I submitted their camp headshot to casting directors! By signing up for camp, you could be next! So don't delay, send in your registration form today -the early bird special expires on April 15th -hey, you can even use your tax refund to pay for camp -what a deal!

As always, scholarships are available. Please see the application form on the website for additional information.

Check out the camp poster below and then go to www.kjpas.com to register! And feel free to contact me if you have any questions. We look forward to working with you this summer!

Sincerely,

Kevin Jones
Artistic Director

The following letter was written to the President and Dean of Roanoke College on 12/14/2009:

Dear President Maxey and Dean Smith,

As Artistic Director of Opera Roanoke I've had the great pleasure of collaborating with Kim Davidson and the RCCC on a number of different Opera Roanoke productions over the years. I've always been so impressed with every aspect of Ms. Davidson's leadership. The care and consummate integrity with which she prepares her young people is second to none. I conduct with orchestras and opera companies all over the country. I can say without exaggeration that Ms. Davidson's work with the RCCC represents the highest level of musical and artistic integrity.

I've taken the liberty of forwarding to you a letter I've written to the editor of the Roanoke Times. There is, of course, no guarantee that it will be published intact. But I wanted you to see what I had written. I am sincere in my enthusiasm for Ms. Davidson and her wonderful work with the RCCC.

All the best for a wonderful Christmas season,

Steven White
Artistic Director, Opera Roanoke

The following letter appeared in the Roanoke Times on 12/16/2009:

On Sunday the Roanoke College Children's Choir performed its annual "Songs of the Season" at Jefferson Center.  It would be impossible to overstate the value of the RCCC, not only to the families of the young people who participate, but also to our entire community.

As a society we too often acquiesce to the seemingly insurmountable horrors of a squalid popular culture that, with every passing year, increasingly assaults our young people with destructive and nihilistic relativism. But the RCCC represents the antithesis of all that. For twenty three years director Kimberly Ruse Davidson has provided for countless young people a matchless musical environment in which the properties of beauty, discipline, logic, commitment, confidence, humility, respect and love all thrive in harmonious compatibility. Ms. Davidson accomplishes this nurturing act of loving kindness through high expectations for her participants and her unwavering implementation of the highest musical standards.

In recent years the RCCC has been garnering national attention and admiration. The choir has been exclusively selected from a host of other fine choirs to perform March 13 in concert at Carnegie Hall. Our pride in the RCCC's accomplishments is exceeded only by our gratitude.
